10 Chemicals Your Body Absorbs Every Time You Put On Nail Polish

Some people view getting a manicure or doing their own nails at home as a relaxing and creative form of self-expression. Sadly it is not as harmless as you think. You may think that because you are using so little, the risk is minimal. Health. A study was done by Duke University and EWG show that isn’t the case.

The study by Duke University and the Environmental Working Group shares that even though polish is applied to the fingernail our bodies still absorb hormone disrupting chemicals every time we use conventional nail polish. In particular, the study mentions triphenyl phosphate (TPHP) an endocrine disrupting chemical that is commonly used in nail polish. Health. The chemical was found in test subjects bodies within 10-14 hours of application. In addition diphenyl phosphate (DPHP) a metabolite of TPHP had increased in test subjects bodies sevenfold.

Consumers and Technicians
Consumers increase their risk for multiple chemical exposures by going to nail salons, where there may be multiple workstations and the risk for exposure is increased. It is however nail technicians who have the greatest risk, since they are exposed to these chemicals on a consistent daily basis. Health.

Ten common nail polish ingredients to avoid
Personally I don’t believe nail polish is worth the risk, but if you simply cannot give up your nail polish then be sure to read labels and avoid these ten chemicals at all costs.

Butyl or ethyl acetate - This is toxic when inhaled, as well as being highly flammable. According to the MSDS this chemical can be seriously damaging to internal organs in the case of repeated or prolonged exposure.

Camphor – This toxic ingredient is poisonous, can add to body toxicity, cause seizures and nervousness/irritability.

Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) – This received a poor rating with EWG, which lists it as a high hazard. They also state that it can cause endocrine disruption and organ system toxicity. This chemical was also banned in Europe, due to its known effect of reproductive problems.

Formaldehyde (or derivatives) - While these may not be as much as they were in the past, many manufacturers still use this chemical. A known carcinogen, it also can cause allergic reactions, skin rashes and irritations

Nitrocellulose – While EWG rates this as low risk, it does state moderate concerns about organ toxicity. This is actually used in car paint, as well as dynamite and fireworks.

Parabens - This chemical acts as a preservative. There are a wide variety of parabens, none of which should be used since they are linked to cancer. Health.

Toluene - Toluene is a noxious chemical used in nail polish, base coats and topcoats to help the polish stay on the nail. Toluene is included in a list of hazardous chemicals cited in a 1987 California law. Exposure can result in headaches, dizziness and cracked skin, as well as more serious effects such as reproductive damage and respiratory complications. The CDC also warns it can cause central nervous system damage.

TPHP – This chemical allows polish to be more durable. As stated previously it is an endocrine disruptor and is known to cause developmental and reproductive problems in animals.

Xylene - This is very irritating to the skin, eyes and respiratory system. This chemical also effects the central nervous system with symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, and tremors.  According to its MSDS sheet, xylene is toxic to blood, kidneys, the nervous system, liver. Repeated or prolonged exposure to the substance can produce target organs damage.

Ethyl tosylamide – Europe has banned this product due to its antibacterial properties and concern over antibiotic resistance. Health.

Nail polish hints and alternative options
Look for nail polish with all the ingredients listed on the label.

Check company websites for a complete list of ingredients and any additional information.

Avoid nail salons and do your nails at home to minimize chemical exposures. Health.

Know what you are buying. Many companies are making labels that are 3, 5, 7, 8 or 9 free. The chemicals they are eliminating vary from company to company, so it’s important to read labels. I’ve given two examples of 7 free labels, so you can see the differences. Some examples include:

3 free labels-Free of: Formaldehyde, toluene, DBP

5 free labels-Free of: Formaldehyde, toluene, DBP, formaldehyde resin, and camphor.

7 free labels-Free of: Formaldehyde, toluene, DBP, formaldehyde resin, camphor, TPHP and xylene.

7 free labels-Free of: Formaldehyde, toluene, DBP, formaldehyde resin, camphor, xylene, and parabens.

8 free labels-Free of: Formaldehyde, toluene, DBP, formaldehyde resin, camphor, xylene, ethyl tosylamide, and triphenyl phosphate.

Effective 2-Minute Stretching Technique Will Help Adjust Your Spine And Reduce Back Pain

Your spine is the most important set of bones you have.

Not only does it support your head, it also supports your entire body.

The structure is connected to your rib cage, which protects most of your vital organs, including your heart and lungs. It also protects your spinal cord, which is a bundle of nerves that links your brain to the rest of your body.

The spine is divided into 4 sections : the cervical spine (neck), thoracic (chest/trunk), lumbar (low back), and sacral (pelvic area).

The cervical spine is built for flexibility to allow a vast range of motion for the head while the lumbar spine is built for the power of your abs and the flexibility of your hips while the thoracic spine is built for the stability of your rib cage.

The lumbar spine takes most of the strain caused by heavy lifting and long periods of sitting. It’s the most common source of back problems, including pain that radiates to the legs or feet. Health. The sacral region is also prone to pain since it’s made up of 5 fused segments of bone that deteriorate in times of stress, malnutrition or lack of physical activity.

Spinal health is influenced by activity level and muscle strength. Your muscles support your spine and keep it in its natural position so skipping out of the gym can worsen your posture and cause bone pain. Regular stretching, body weight exercises, and proper posture are all important for supporting your spine.

However, despite our best efforts, your spine can take a hit from sitting all day or being stressed. Regular massages and chiropractic treatment will definitely help, but there are simple routines you can do at home to help readjust the spine and minimize back pain. Health.

  3. Take out your strap and wrap it around your right foot so that it is resting just under the ball of your foot.
  4. Straighten your right leg upwards and hold each end of the strap firmly. Walk your hands upward on the strap so that your arms are almost straight.
  5. Try to keep your leg directly above your hip throughout the exercise.
  6. Hold for a few breaths.
  7. Repeat with the other leg.
  8. Next, repeat the stretch with your right leg and slowly straighten your left leg outward so that it is touching the floor. Keep your hips straight and keep both legs in line with your hips.
  9. Hold for a few breaths.
  10. Repeat with the left leg, extending the right leg on the ground.
  11. Release and bring your legs into your chest, wrapping your arms around them and gently rolling yourself side to side.

Dye Your Hair Naturally: These Recipes Will Make Your Hair Perfect

According to studies, about 65% of women dye their hair, so you are probably one of those who regularly use over-the-counter hair dyes well.

However, these hair dyes are abundant in chemicals, and as reported by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), more than 5,000 different chemicals are added to them.

Therefore, the common contact with these chemicals leads to various adverse effects on health. On the other hand, there are perfectly effective natural alternatives that can help you dye your hair in a safe way:

Walnut Shells
Walnut shells are amazing in the case of dark brown color. You should crush the shells, boil them for half an hour, and leave them to cool. You can also use walnut powder instead.

Then, strain the mixture and apply it to the hair. It should remain to act for an hour, and then rinse it with lukewarm water. Health.

If you like to have a more intense color, you can re- heat the strained juice until it boils, and it’s simmered down to ¼ of the original volume. Then, cool it in the fridge, strain, and pour it over the hair.

Lemon Juice
The lemon juice is great for highlighting. Just pray it on the hair, and comb it. Leave it to act for a few hours. For lighter nuances, dry it in the sun, or mix it with chamomile. You should repeat the procedure several times for the wanted effects.

Herbs
Various herbs can help you get various different hair colors, as follows:

Red:

You can use calendula, marigold, rosehips and hibiscus, and the more you use them the deeper color you get. You should add the herbs in water and leave them to simmer for half an hour. Then, cool, strain, and pour it over the skin/If possible, dry the hair under the sun.

Brunette/Dark:

You can use rosemary, nettle, and sage. Leave the herbs to simmer for 30 minutes, then strain the mixture, cool, and spray the hair. Leave it to act for an hour.

Blonde:

In the case of blonde hair, you will benefit the most from the use of saffron, marigold, chamomile, calendula, and sunflower petals. You should also use Rhubarb root for the grays. For lighter colors, add catnip, and in the case of darker colors, add black tea as well.  Simmer for half an hour, and then strain the mixture, leave it to cool, and pour it over the hair.

Coffee
Coffee is excellent in the case of darker hair colors and helps you get a chocolate nuance. You should brew a strong organic coffee, leave it to cool and mix 2 tablespoons of the coffee grounds with 2 cups of leave in all-natural conditioner.

Apply the mixture on the hair, and leave it to act for an hour.

Rinse with apple cider vinegar. you can also add coffee on the hair directly after shampooing; leave it to act for 20 minutes, and then rinse with apple cider vinegar for long-lasting effects. In the end, wash it with warm water.

Tea
Tea is best with the natural hair color as it is not as strong as coffee. You can use black tea to darken gray hairs, chamomile for blondes, and rooibos for redheads.

You should add 3-5 teabags to 2 cups of water. Cool, the tea and apply it on the hair. If your goal is to cover the gray hairs, mix in fresh or dried sage to easily open up hair follicles.

Leave it on for at least an hour, and rinse with lukewarm water. The tea might also be left to act during the entire night.

Beet and Carrot Juice
Yu can use them alone or in a combination. They are excellent to add red tints to your current color. For a reddish-orange color, use more carrot, and in the case of more red hair color, add more beet juice.

Apply a cup of the juices on the hair, work it through, wrap the hair and leave the juices to act for an hour. Then, rinse the hair with water and spray it with an apple cider vinegar solution.

Henna
Henna powder formed from the henna plant leaves contains a coloring pigment which will provide amazing effects on the hair. If used alone, it colors the hair red-orange.

To soften its effects, you can mix it with some chamomile tea. An also add a tablespoon of vinegar for an improved color release.

Apply it on the hair, comb it through, wrap the hair in a plastic wrap, and leave the natural dye to act for a few hours. Then, rinse with water.
