It’s normal for your hair to fall out and this usually starts happening long after it stopped growing. However, in some people hair starts thinning in the same time while it’s growing and this is mainly due to stress. Stress disrupts this normal process and you end up with bald spots and patches.

Nutrition expert Wendy Bazilian says that “If you’re eating a highly processed diet, any nutrients you do get are shuttled to your body’s crucial operations, like your heart and other organs.” This means that all those nutrients which your hair needs to stay healthy won’t get there and this leads to dull, brittle hair. It’s not like one hamburger and a soda can lead to this, but if you eat junk food habitually it will inevitably happen. Wendy adds that a dietary fat deficiency can actually prevent your hair from absorbing nutrients like vitamin D. Consume plenty of healthy fats, such as omega-3 fatty acids and mono-saturated fats. Pay attention to your water intake as well because dehydration can lead to hair loss. Your hair is made of ¼ water and is the primary energy source for hair cells.

The same effect in women happens as a result of a hormone called DHEA, converting testosterone into DHT.

You can find your solution in a number of foods which are natural DHT inhibitors:

How to Use Rice Water for Beautiful Hair and Flawless Skin!

Asian people include rice in almost every meal. But, besides being part of their diet, they have also included this food in their beauty regimen.

This ingredient promotes both, our health and beauty, thanks to the contained vitamin B, C, and E, minerals, and 8 essential amino acids. Rice water is packed with nutrients that are exceptionally beneficial for our hair and skin.

You get rice water by boiling or soaking rice in water. The milky white solution at the end can be diluted, concentrated, or even fermented if you like to take advantage of all of its benefits. Rice water is probably one of the cheapest and simplest home beauty products. All you need to prepare it is rice and some water.

You can prepare rice water by either boiling the rice, or without boiling it.

Learn how to make it with boiling:

First, rinse a cup of organic rice with fresh water, and then cook it with three cups of water in an uncovered pan. Then, strain the water in a separate container, and once it cools, transfer it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week. After this period, you can prepare a mixture for your beauty regimen by diluting 1-2 tbsp. of the concentrated solution in a cup of water. You’ll get almost milky-looking solution that you can use as needed.

How to make it without boiling:

After washing a cup of organic water with water, add two cups of clean water. Let it soak for 15-30 minutes, and then stir well. Drain the water in a separate container and store it in the fridge for 3-4 days. Before using the rice water, shake it well.

Another way is to allow fermentation by keeping the drained water at a room temperature for two days. To use the fermented water, mix one part of it with tree parts of plain water. You can use your rice water in your daily hair and skin care routine. You will no longer have to buy costly hair and skin cosmetic products loaded with chemicals.

These are the rice water benefits for hair and skin:

1. Improves Hair Health
This water will make your hair strong, soft, and healthy. The protein in rice water is beneficial for your hair that is otherwise consisted of protein. It fills in the cracks and strengthens the hair shafts, making your hair soft and shiny. What’s more, rice water contains a kind of carbohydrate called inositol, which protects the hair from damage, maintaining it soft and healthy. It can even be used in the treatment of hair loss, as it increases the growth of new hair.

Shampoo your hair, and then pour it with rice water diluted with water. Massage your scalp with your fingers for about 10 minutes. Wash your hair thoroughly with clean water. Do this 2-3 times weekly.
You can add several drops of lavender, rosemary, or geranium essential oils, or green tea to the rice water before using it for an extra nourishment. Don’t forget diluting the fermented rice water before using it on your hair.

2. Tames Frizzy Hair
Rice water is especially beneficial for unmanageable and frizzy hair. It will deep condition your hair thanks to the good amount of protein it contains. It will also improve its elasticity and help you detangle it. The International Journal of Cosmetic Science has published a 2010 study which investigated the history of the hair care habits and hairstyles of Japanese women. The researchers discovered that they have rinsed their hair with rice water every day. Rice water improves hair elasticity and reduces surface friction.

After shampooing your hair, wash it with cool water. Rinse it again with a solution prepared by mixing fermented rice water and bath water in 1:3 ratio. For best results, do this once or twice a week.

3. Soothes Irritated Skin
Rice water is also useful in the treatment of dry skin lesions of eczema thanks to the starch in its content. It can also soothe skin inflammation and irritation. Acta Dermato Venereologica has published a 2002 study according to which exposing your damaged skin on bath water with rice starch two times a day for 15 minutes, will improve the healing capacity of the skin by 20%. This bath is especially recommended for atopic dermatitis patients, and anyone with barrier damaged skin.

You can also add several cups of rice water to your warm bath for any kind of skin inflammation or irritation. Soak in the water for around 20 minutes, 2 times a day.
If you have irritation on certain part of your skin, apply cotton ball soaked in cool rice water. Do this several times on a daily basis.

4. Tightens Skin Pores
If you have large or open pores, you have more chances of getting blackheads and acne. People with oily skin are especially prone to open pores. Rice water is very effective in this kind of skin problems. It functions as a natural astringent to tighten and tone your skin, restoring its pH balance and reducing the open pores.

Mix rice water and plain water in equal amounts. Apply soaked cotton ball in the mixture onto your face, and allow it to stay for 15-20 minutes. Then, wash your face. For optimal results, do this every night on a cleansed face.

5. Improves Skin Complexion
You can also improve your skin complexion with the help of rice water. It will increase its elasticity, flush toxins out of the skin, and lower inflammation, making it flawless.

Moreover, rice water prevents hyperpigmentation and aging spots. Apply cotton pads soaked in diluted rice water on your clean face. Let them stay for 5-10 minutes, and then massage your face in circular motions for few more minutes. Wash your face with lukewarm water. Do this beauty treatment once a day.

6. Softens the Skin
Rice water is excellent if you want a soft and moisturized skin. It contains a protein which doesn’t allow water loss, thus keeping the moisture of the skin much longer. Furthermore, the antioxidants it contains reduce free radical damage caused by sun exposure, aging, and environmental factors.

Dilute one part of rice water with two parts of cool water. Take a clean washcloth, and soak it in the solution. Then, put it on your face, previously cleaned, and let it act for at least 15 minutes. Wash your face with rest of the rice water for a smooth and soft skin. After that, wash your face with clean water. Do this once a day.

More Tips

Use whatever variety of rice you like: white, jasmine, brown rice, etc.
Before using the rice, wash it with water to remove any particles
Choose organic rice whenever you can, as it doesn’t contain pesticides
Always dilute the rice water when you want to use it for a hair treatment. Otherwise, it might cause lumps or accumulate in your hair over time

5. After 10 minutes, rinse your face well with some mild face lotion.

Practice this treatment once a week, especially before you go to bed.

Moisturize Dry Skin
A regular consumption of this juice will hydrate your skin and when applied topically, it will help you remove dead skin cells.

Removes Pigmentation and Blemishes
Beetroot abounds in high levels of vitamin C, a very important vitamin that reduces pigmentation and certain skin flaws. It can further reduce the skin discoloration.

Prevent Hair Loss
Along the many health properties, beetroot is rich in potassium, an important mineral that prevents many health problems such as premature hair loss. Such problems occur as a result of potassium deficiency. Also, potassium will promote hair growth.

Highlights Your Hair
If you a fan of some burgundy streaks on your hair, you can do this completely natural treatment. Do the following things:

1. Combine some beetroot juice and henna.

2. Apply the mixture on your hair and let it for about two hours.

3. Then wash your hair well with a shampoo.

Remove Dandruff
Beetroot will solve the problems with itchy scalp with flakes. This healing property is a result of the amount of silica and some enzymes that reduce scalp problems. Beetroot will not only solve these problems, but will provide a soft and shiny look to your hair.

Also, beet is very important for the hemoglobin in the body. It can increase the levels of hemoglobin and lower the blood pressure.

There are plenty of reasons why you should choose beetroot not only for a healthy hair without chemicals, but for the overall health of your body.

Hair Repair: How to Get Strong, Shiny Hair

What’s Your Hair Type?
More than half of women don’t know what kind of hair they have, and they use the wrong styling products as a result, says Jeni Thomas, PhD, Pantene senior scientist. Figure out where your strands stand with this easy guide.

You have fine hair if… it automatically falls into a part when wet or your strands look thin and delicate. Fine hair is typically straight or wavy.

You have medium-to-thick hair if… it takes more than 20 minutes to blow-dry. Medium-to-thick hair, which can be straight, wavy, or curly, is the most common type.

You have coarse hair if… one strand makes a sound when you roll it between your fingers. Coarse hair feels rough and can be straight, curly, or kinky.

Mane Mission: Sleekness
Frizz occurs when individual strands stray from the pack as hair is exposed to humidity.

Tress test: Turn your bathroom into a steam room: Close the door and run hot water in the shower. If after five minutes your strands start to swell, tame them with these tricks.

Add hydration. Moisture may seem like public enemy number one, but frizzy strands are actually dry. They lack fatty acids that retain water, says Nathaniel Hawkins, a celebrity hairstylist in New York City. To strengthen your hair, apply an oil treatment, like Matrix Sleek Silk Wonder Smoothing Oil , to dry strands before you shampoo.

Dry completely. Leaving hair damp encourages frizz to form because any moisture can make your style revert to its natural state, Hawkins says. No time for a thorough blowout? Apply mousse and let hair air-dry almost completely while you get dressed. Then smooth it with a blow-dryer for a few minutes to polish strands.

Get perma-sleek. Pro smoothing treatments can make you silky for months, but many come with a hefty price tag and potentially toxic formaldehyde. Yikes! Stick to safe at-home alternatives that de-frizz with keratin, which helps fill in porous spots so your strands lie flat. Try John Frieda Frizz-Ease 3-Day Straight.

Mane Mission: Manageability
If you have long hair, tangles can also be signs of damage. Anytime hair is weak, the potential for knot-caused breakage increases, says Elizabeth Cunnane Phillips, a trichologist at Philip Kingsley Clinic in New York City.

Tress test: Put your hair in a bun during a workout. If you can’t run your fingers through it when you let it down afterward, try these tips.

Start at the bottom. Combing wet hair from the roots will only push tangles farther down the shaft. Instead, start from the ends and work your way up. Mist stubborn spots with a leave-in conditioner; we like It’s a 10 Miracle Leave-In Product.

Braid for impact. Winter winds can kick up more knots. According to a Tresemmé survey, 52 percent of women are likely to throw in the towel when styling their hair on a windy day. Before stepping out, work hair into a tight braid to protect it.

Mane Mission: Volume
According to Matrix hair care, 42 percent of women say their hair lacks fullness. Common body snatchers include hormonal changes (such as those that occur with pregnancy), a chilly climate (winter air can leave hair limp), and age (hair’s density peaks in your teens).

Tress test: Flip your head down and fluff your roots with your fingers. If your hair falls flat when you flip your head back, here’s how to bodybuild.

Shampoo daily. “Clean hair has more volume,” Cunnane Phillips says. Zap buildup with a gentle cleanser made for fine strands.

Condition correctly. To find a product that moisturizes without making hair too soft, dab a little on your finger. “The best formulas for fine hair feel almost tacky,” says Hawkins, who suggests Aveda Pure Abundance Volumizing Clay Conditioner.

Plump up all over. “Don’t settle for volume only at your crown,” Hawkins says. Squirt a generous amount of mousse (think golf ball size) in your hands, flip your hair over, and distribute the product evenly from roots to ends.

Mane Mission: Shine
Radiance is the ultimate sign of hair health. When its cuticles are flat, hair is reflective, says Charles Baker Strahan, a celebrity stylist for Herbal Essences.

Tress test: Grab a hand mirror and stand by a window to examine clean hair in natural light. You should notice a band of light that spans your head. Don’t see it? Get glossy with these easy tweaks.

Handle with care. Treat your hair like your favorite cashmere sweater: Avoid any friction. Blot hair dry rather than vigorously rubbing it with a towel. When blow-drying, Jet Rhys, a salon owner in San Diego, suggests that you use the nozzle attachment to concentrate the air down the hair shaft — the direction in which the cuticle lies.

Do a detox. Styling products can leave behind a milky residue that regular shampoo can’t cut through. For a deep clean that won’t strip hair of its natural oils, mix one tablespoon each of lemon juice and vinegar with a dollop of your regular shampoo. Lather for about two minutes and rinse thoroughly. If you need extra sheen, mist your hair with Aussie Heat Protecting Shine Spray  before blow-drying.

Mane Mission: Strength
Each strand of hair is built tough: The outer layer protects the cortex within. But over time, environmental factors and heat styling can wear down the outer layer.

Each strand of hair is built tough: The outer layer protects the cortex within. But over time, environmental factors and heat styling can wear down the outer layer.

Get flexible. Put some spring into brittle strands with a weekly mask that has essential fatty acids, Hawkins says. Try Organix Ever Straight Brazilian Therapy Masque.

Serve up protein. Eating lean meats, beans, and eggs will help nourish your hair at the root, Cunnane Phillips explains. Applied topically, protein bonds to porous spots, making strands sturdier. Try Pantene Split End Repair Crème.

Lower the heat. “Blow-dry or flatiron, but don’t do both,” Rhys says. Are you a flatiron fanatic? Try one slow pass rather than several quick ones, suggests Sam Villa, education artistic director for Redken Fifth Avenue.

5 Ways to Use a Toothbrush for Better Hair

Keeping up-to-date with all of the new, must-have beauty tools can be exhausting and expensive. We’re not about that. Luckily, there’s one do-it-all tool that you already have in your medicine cabinet: a toothbrush.

The hardest-working, most versatile, and most sorely unsung hero of the makeup case isn’t some expensive specialized implement; it’s a toothbrush. A plain, medium-bristled toothbrush is the only thing you need to always look well-tressed, and it works so much magic with your hair and brows, your teeth might get a little jealous.

Smooth Flyaways
Spritz a few sprays of light-hold hairspray or a shine spray  onto the bristles and use it to smooth down those wispies at the hairline. Perfect for creating sleek, polished updos.

Apply Dry Shampoo
Dry shampoo is great for absorbing oil and giving hair a little lift without washing and restyling. Instead of sprinkling it over your whole head, apply only a little bit at the roots, and use the toothbrush to comb the grains through your hair for a flawless finish without residue.

Touch Up Roots
Between colorings—either at home or at the salon—a root touch-up kit is a great way to keep new growth camouflaged. After using a touch-up pen, like ColorMark, an Allure Best of Beauty Award winner, use the toothbrush to work the product through the hair, making sure it’s evenly and precisely distributed.

Get Some Lift
If you want a little more volume at the crown (or anywhere, really), use a toothbrush to strategically backcomb and tease hair into a fuller shape. The bristles, smaller and finer than a hairbrush, will give you a more subtle result. Hold the style in place with a spritz of L’Oreal Elnett Satin Hairspray.

Tame Unruly Brows
Before plucking or applying brow powder, swipe a toothbrush across your eyebrows to groom them. For extra hold, apply a little bit of clear brow gel to the bristles.

6 Superfoods for Healthy Hair

What you eat can make a difference. Incorporating proteins and complex carbohydrates into your everyday diet can help strengthen your strands. Add these foods to your diet for healthy, shiny hair.

It’s all about balance when it comes to optimal nutrition for maintaining healthy hair. “Hair is a fast-growing tissue and it’s likely to make demands on your body,” says Brian Thompson, principal trichologist and director of product development at Philip Kingsley Trichological Centre in New York and London. “You need a mixture of protein, complex carbohydrates, and vitamins and minerals. But if you consume too much of any one thing, particularly certain vitamins and minerals, you can create problems with hair growth.”

Good hair nutrition begins with getting enough protein, which is the building block of your hair. Then you need complex carbohydrates to help assemble the proteins for hair growth. “Once you’ve considered protein, then getting iron in absorbable forms is one of the single most important minerals as far as hair growth is concerned,” says Thompson. Other important vitamins and minerals include B complex, which is associated with energy production and building good hair and skin issues, folic acid, B12, and zinc.

In his book The Hair Bible: A Complete Guide to Health and Care (Aurum, 2003), famed hairdresser Philip Kingsley stresses the importance of eating a healthy and protein-packed breakfast each day. He says that in the morning your energy levels to your hair follicles are at their lowest. Here, a list of foods that Thompson and Kingsley recommend be consumed along with fresh fruits and vegetables.

BEEF

If you don’t have high cholesterol, Thompson recommends eating red meat twice a week for optimal hair health. Not only does beef have the protein you need, but also B vitamins, iron, and zinc, important minerals for healthy hair.

Recommended Serving Size: 3.5 ounces of roasted, lean beef, 175 calories

EGGS OR EGG WHITES

Vegetarian? Can’t eat red meat for health reasons? Then egg whites are the way to go. “If you can’t eat an animal protein, egg whites are the next best thing,” says Thompson. “Their value is underestimated in our society.”

Recommended Serving Size: One large egg, 84 calories

BROWN SHORT-GRAIN RICE

You should have complex carbohydrates, which feed you energy over a longer period of time than refined carbohydrates, with your protein source at meals. Brown short-grain rice is an ideal form. It’s also a good source of B vitamins and some fiber.

Recommended Serving Size: 1/4 cup dry rice, 179 calories

COTTAGE CHEESE

Try low-fat cottage cheese for a protein-packed breakfast or lunch on the go when you don’t have time to make eggs. Top it with some fresh berries for an added serving of fruit. Plus, cottage cheese is also a good source of calcium.

Recommended Serving Size: Scant half cup of 1 percent fat cottage cheese, 72 calories

BACON

Although it’s not a good food to eat if you’re trying to lose weight, Kingsley recommends eating a normal serving of bacon for extra B vitamins, zinc, and protein.

Recommended Serving Size: Fried bacon, 3.5 ounces, 576 calories

SALMON

Try it smoked or fresh at breakfast, lunch, or dinner for a good dose of protein along with B vitamins, including B12, and other vitamins and minerals.

Recommended Serving Size: Fresh salmon fillet, 3.5 ounces, 180 calories Smoked salmon, 2 ounces, 71 calories

Finally, How to Get Rid of Dandruff for Good

You may not know it, but your body is covered with yeast. Yes, yeast. It lives on everyone’s skin as part of our microbiome—the normal bacteria and fungus that live symbiotically with us. In some people, the yeast is NBD. In others, their immune system gets angry and tries to fight it off, resulting in inflammation. Translation: An itchy scalp and flakes.

Some suffer from dandruff year-round, while others get it only during the warmer months. In hot, humid weather, we sweat more and oil gets trapped on the skin. More oil means a happy environment for yeast to grow in, and the relatively higher yeast levels may lead to more dandruff.

So how do you finally get it to go away? Try these tips for a flake-free scalp.

Find the key ingredients.  With so many dandruff treatments available over the counter, it’s hard to know what to choose. Here’s a breakdown of ingredients to look out for:

  • Zinc pyrithione, selenium sulfide, and ketoconazole. These ingredients actually reduce the yeast levels on the skin. Just like turning off the gas line to your stove, killing the yeast gets rid of the source of inflammation in the skin. They can be found in products like Head and Shoulders, Selsun Blue, and Nizoral shampoos. You can also get prescription antifungal treatments from your dermatologist.
  • Salicylic acid. While best-known for its use in treating acne, salicylic acid helps exfoliate dead skin cells and removes excess oil. If you have thick scales on your scalp, salicylic acid is particularly helpful at thinning them out. It can be found in products like T/Sal shampoo.
  • Tar. Used for decades to treat conditions like psoriasis, tar has anti-inflammatory properties and is useful in treating more severe forms of dandruff. It’s commonly used alongside other treatments, and can be found in products like T/Gel shampoo.
  • Topical steroids. Topical steroids directly put out inflammation in the skin, and can be super helpful for improving itchy skin. They’re commonly used alongside antifungal treatments for dandruff, and should be used directly on the most itchy spots. Examples include Scalpicin, which is available over the counter. Prescription-strength versions are available from your dermatologist.

Use your anti-dandruff shampoos correctly. While dandruff shampoos will wash your hair, remember that dandruff is a scalp issue—not a hair problem. It can be a bit confusing because they’re called shampoos, but these products should actually be looked at as scalp treatments. So, using your fingertips, make sure to massage the products into the scalp, and let them sit there so they can do their job. Applying and then immediately rinsing will not allow enough contact time, so I usually tell patients to apply, sing the alphabet, then rinse.

Leave the steroids alone. As in, once you apply a topical steroid solution, it should be applied and left on the skin. Do not apply for more than two weeks in a row. If that much time passes and you don’t see improvement—or if your scalp issue is really severe—make sure to visit a dermatologist for an evaluation.

Accept the facts. Ultimately, whether we develop dandruff or not is determined by our genes and our body makeup. We can’t alter genetics that lead to yeast problems, so don’t freak out if this is a recurring issue. Just follow the tips above to help keep them under control.

Your Conditioner Could Actually Be Causing Hair Loss

Beauty news update: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is investigating an unusually high number of adverse reaction reports on a conditioner in the WEN product line. Nothing life-threatening, but certainly life-altering, as many people are experiencing hair loss, balding, and rashes. Reports say the culprit for all the reactions has not been disclosed, but it’s unlikely to be related to bacteria, given the strength of preservatives in most over-the-counter goods.

But here’s the thing: As dermatologists, we see this type of stuff quite frequently—daily, in fact. Not in relation to WEN, but rather amongst other readily available products. For hair loss—or in scientific speak, alopecia—there are many different causes. Seriously, anything from over-processing with harsh chemicals/heated tools, medication, stress, too-tight hairstyles, psoriasis, vitamin deficiencies, hormone irregularites, or just plain ol’ genetics could be at fault.

In other words, if the scalp gets inflamed enough from the use of a cosmetic product, hair loss can certainly be a symptom. The condition is called allergic contact dermatitis (ACD), and it causes irritated, often itchy, red rashes in areas of contact with various chemical products. Preservatives, dyes, surfactants, fragrances, and plant extracts are among the common ingredients that cause this problem.

Here’s what else you need to know about ACD:

  • You can use the same cosmetic product every day of your life and then out of the blue develop a reaction.
  • The skin rash may not be noted immediately after use—it could take 10-14 days for the first symptom to arise.
  • It may not be symmetric, or in the exact location of contact. For example, nail polish and shampoos can lead to eyelid ACD (from rubbing or dripping into the eyes, respectively).
  • ACD can linger even after you’ve stopped using the product at fault.

While it sounds pretty overwhelming, don’t freak out too much. If what’s causing the ACD isn’t abundantly obvious, your dermatologist can help nail down the cause through a special allergy test called Patch Testing. And while that lingering rash may be related to an allergy in your favorite cleanser, lipstick, eye shadow or lotion, don’t throw your stuff out just yet. Set up an appointment with your derm so they can appropriately guide you on next steps. Because, hey, beauty products are expensive. Why restock if you don’t have to?

9 amazing foods that help prevent and reverse hair loss

It`s a popular belief that hair loss affects women only. However, the truth is that men and children are as prone to hair loss as women.  Many factors contribute to hair loss, but androgen, a hormone derived from testosterone, is believed to be one of the main causes.

The entire body is covered in various types of hair, except for the soles of the feet and the palms of the hands.  Of course, not all types of hair are the same- some of them are hardly visible while others are thicker and much more noticeable.

Hair consists of protein, a substance produced in the hair follicles. During the production of new hair cells, the old ones are removed through the skin`s surface. As a matter of fact, the hair on the surface of the skin is actually a string of dead skin cells.

Losing Your Hair: What Causes It?
An average adult head has 100,000-150,000 hairs, and most people lose up to 100 hairs on a daily basis. This is the reason why you may find hair strands on your hairbrush, particularly after showering.

There are many factors that affect hair loss, such as:

  • Iron deficiency
  • Stress ( physical and emotional)
  • Drugs, such as chemotherapy
  • Medical conditions such as thyroid disorders

Testosterone travels in the blood attached to sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG). When attached to SHBG, it`s considered inactive and when not bound, it`s called free testosterone.

Free testosterone is usually turned into dihydrotestosterone (DHT) by the enzyme 5-alpha reductase.  Low amounts of SHBG equals higher amounts of free testosterone, and more available of it to be converted to DHT. Nearly 5 percent of free testosterone is converted to DHT, the compound that cause the hair follicles to have a shorter lifespan and to shrink.

9 Treatments for Hair Loss

1. Saw Palmetto

The effectiveness of saw palmetto lies in its ability to inhibit the conversion of testosterone into DHT. High levels of this compound are linked to hair loss while high levels of testosterone are liked to hair growth.

As the conversion is inhibited, testosterone levels increase, reducing hair loss and promote hair re-growth. It is recommended to take 160 mg twice daily.

2. Pygeum (Prunus Africana)

It works by blocking 5-alpha reductase enzyme from converting testosterone to DHT.

3. Nettle Root

Just like pygeum, this herb is also known to stop 5-alpha reductase enzyme from converting testosterone to DHT.

4. Pumpkin Seeds

Pumpkin seeds are packed with delta-7 stearine, a steroid that blocks the accumulation of DHT in the hair follicle. Consequently, DHT is unable to affect the hair follicle.

5. Tomatoes, Watermelon, Carrots, and Mangoes

All of the aforementioned foods contain lycopene, a compound that blocks DHT by stopping 5 alpha reductase from converting testosterone into DHT.

6. Almonds, Walnuts, Peanuts, and Pecans

They are loaded with L-lysine, a compound that acts as natural DHT inhibitor.

7. Spinach, Kale, Cashews, Wheat Germ, and Cooked White Mushrooms

These foods are rich in zinc, a well-known DHT inhibitor.

8. Green Tea

Green tea contains Epigallocatechin-3-Gallate, or EGCG, a compound that blocks the production of DHT and reduces its levels notably.

9. Fenugreek

Fenugreek is yet another powerful inhibitor of the conversion of testosterone to DHT.

More Tips for Reducing Hair Loss
Keep optimal levels of SHBG in order to leave less free testosterone to be converted to DHT. SHBG reduces with obesity, which means that keeping a healthy body weight optimizes SHBG levels.

Since DHT is far more damaging when there are high levels of inflammation within the body, reduce inflammation by following a healthy diet high in omega-3 fats.

Biotin is yet another nutrient needed for healthy hair, as it helps create a healthy environment for the hair to grow. Solid sources of biotin include tuna, salmon, eggs, legumes, Swiss chard, peanuts, berries, bananas, and wheat germ.

Gelatin Hair Mask Recipe: The Secret To Shiny, Strong Hair

Gelatin: The Secret To Shiny, Strong Hair

If your stylist has ever told you conditioners like Pantene might wreck your hair over time, here’s why:

Many store-bought conditioners contain silicone, which coats the hair to make it smooth and shiny. Unfortunately, this only makes the hair **look** healthy – in reality it’s doing the exact opposite. Silicone blocks moisture from reaching the hair shaft, which can cause strands to become dry and brittle over time.

A far better option is gelatin, which contains keratin proteins that actually bind with hair to strengthen it. Unlike whole proteins such as egg yolk, which have difficulty bonding with hair, the partially cooked proteins found in gelatin bond easily. Gelatin adheres especially well to damaged areas, but also nourishes the entire strand as well. It helps to smooth the hair cuticle, boost shine and reduce breakage.

Those with wavy or curly hair also report that it reduces frizz.

Something to keep in mind is that, when it comes to protein treatments for hair, you can get too much of a good thing. See the Tips & Troubleshooting section below for info on how to get the best results.

Because I’ve been using gelatin in my hair for awhile now, I couldn’t get a true “before” photo to share with you.  Fortunately I had an adorable little volunteer that was willing to help me out. The photo below is of my daughter, Katie, before and after her first gelatin hair mask.

Her hair looks a little oily in the photo on the right, but it’s actually not at all. I’d just run a large-tooth comb though it, which made it separate in a funny way. Oops!

The photo on the right is my hair after the same treatment. My hair is a weird blend of straight and wavy when it air dries, but you can see that it’s not oily or greasy. It is super, super soft though – I love gelatin masks!

Back to my daughters before and after: The light is a little brighter in the second photo because the sun was higher, but the increase in shine is real. The photos were taken about two hours apart because I let her run around outside while her hair dried. Both are completely unretouched.

Gelatin Hair Mask Recipe

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 tablespoon powdered gelatin (where to buy grass-fed gelatin)
  • 1/3 cup water (see optional add-ins for alternatives)
  • 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar (I use this brand)
  • 1 teaspoon honey (I buy mine from a local beekeeper, but when he’s out of stock I order this brand)

OPTIONAL ADD-INS

Coconut Milk

Moisturizing. (Note: If you use homemade coconut milk, make sure to strain it through a coffee filter or you may end up with white flecks of coconut meat in your hair. Store-bought coconut milk will work fine – no filtering necessary.

Herbal Tea

Peppermint, rosemary and nettle – which add shine – are suitable for all hair types. Sage, marshmallow root and elder flower tea are helpful for dry hair.

Moisturizers

If your hair is very dry, you might try adding 1-2 tablespoons of avocado or banana to your mixture. Give it a whir in the blender before use to ensure even application.

Another option is to add a little bit of oil. A few drops may be enough, but some people add as much as one tablespoon. Oils to consider are olive, coconut, almond, and argan.

Essential Oils

Rosemary adds shine, chamomile is helpful for dry hair and tea tree is helpful for oily hair. For the recipe below, use 12-15 drops.

MAKING YOUR GELATIN HAIR MASK

Add liquid to a small saucepan. Slowly sprinkle gelatin over your liquid while whisking to prevent lumps. Place the pan on your stove and allow the liquid to heat until steaming, stirring often with a spoon to prevent the gelatin from sticking to the bottom of the pan. When the mixture is steaming, remove it from heat.

When the mixture has cooled down somewhat – it should be warm but not so hot that it’s uncomfortable to touch – add in the honey, vinegar, and any optional ingredients.

USING YOUR GELATIN HAIR MASK

When the mixture is warm but not so hot that it’s uncomfortable to touch, apply it to clean, wet hair. I like to dip the ends of my hair into the jar, then pour a little bit on one side of my scalp and work it down from roots to tips before moving to the other side.

Allow the mask to sit for 10-30 minutes. If you’re planning to let it sit for much longer than 10 minutes, cover your hair with a shower cap so that it doesn’t dry out. When the time is up, rinse very thoroughly, follow with conditioner (here’s my recipe) or diluted apple cider vinegar, and allow to air dry.

If you find that your hair feels crunchy or brittle, see the “Tips & Troubleshooting” section below.

Tips & Troubleshooting

When it comes to protein and hair, you can get too much of a good thing. Healthy hair is both strong and flexible, but hair that has too much protein hardens, loses flexibility, and begins to break.

On the other hand, hair that is fragile is also prone to breakage. The trick is to find a balance between the two.  If you find that your hair is feeling stiff or crunchy after a treatment, gently rinse your hair again just to make sure all the excess was removed, then follow with conditioner (here’s my recipe) or diluted apple cider vinegar and rinse again. Then next time you do a treatment, use about half the amount of gelatin you used before.

Experiment with how much you need. Shorter hair may need only half of what the recipe calls for, while very long, thick hair may need more.

Do this treatment no more than once a week – once every month is best for most people.

How To Use Coconut Oil For Hair Growth

If you are searching through magazines and websites for natural hair care products, you will find in many of them the coconut oil listed as a “super-food” for your hair. This is because of its antibacterial and antifungal properties and because it is rich in minerals and vitamins.

Coconut oil stimulates hair growth because the proteins and oil prevent the loss of proteins, which can usually lead to hair weakness and damage. If you use it twice a week, by massaging the scalp, you will notice that the circulation and the hydration on your scalp has improved.

HOW TO USE IT?
People that try to stop the hair loss should use it warm, by massaging it gently on the scalp. This way, the coconut oil penetrates deeply in the follicles, strengthens and nourishes the hair.

In order to achieve maximum results, before applying it on your hair you should warm it up a little. Apply the oil on your scalp and rub the scalp gently to ensure that the oil spreads adequately on the entire area. Continue massaging the scalp for at least 5 minutes. Leave the oil on your hair for at least 1 hour (or up to 2-4 hours if you want to achieve maximum results) and then wash it off with a mild shampoo with natural extracts.

You should wash your hair properly as improper washing leads to the oils clogging together on the scalp and inhibiting hair growth.
