4 Natural Remedies To Cure Receding Gums

Receding gums can be quite alarming. Not only are they painful, they can also lead to pockets, or gaps, between your teeth and gum line, allowing the build up of harmful bacteria.

According to WebMD, this can lead to severe damage of supporting tissue and bone structure of your teeth as well as eventual tooth loss.

Believe it or not, a study published in the Journal of Periodontology Online found that one of the causes is actually being a little too zealous with your teeth cleaningroutine.

Another cause is genetics. According to WebMD, 30% of the population is predisposed to gum disease. If you’re among that number, you’ll always be at an increased risk, no matter how well you clean.

Another cause of receding gums, perhaps unsurprisingly, is smoking. According to Simple Steps Dental, smoking is one of the biggest factors in the development of a variety of gum problems, including receding gums.

So what can you do about receding gums? Do you simply have to grin and bear it?

Thankfully, no!

There are several natural remedies out there that have been found to combat receding gums. Note that these remedies are of course most useful if the problem is discovered before it gets to the point where surgery is necessary. Things get messy from there – gum tissue grafts and all sorts of expensive stuff.

With that being said, if you’ve just begun to notice some of the issues associated with a receding gum line (such as bleeding after brushing or flossing, swollen gums, bad breath and pain at the gum line) there may still be time to try out some of the following remedies for relief and healing:

Green Tea

A Japanese study published by the American Dental Association found regular consumption of green tea to be helpful in the promotion of healthy teeth and gums.

The study found a decrease in three indicators of periodontal disease – periodontal pocket depth, attachment loss of gum tissue and bleeding – when green tea was consumed each day by study participants.

Aloe Vera

Yet another use for what must be one of the most magical plants in existence? You bet.

A study published in the Journal of Indian Society of Periodontology names aloe as a “soothing healer to periodontal disease.” The study evaluated 15 subjects and found that when aloe vera gel was administered orally, the severity of various gum diseases was reduced.

That doesn’t mean you have to break open leaves and lather the suspicious-looking gel all over your gums. There are various aloe vera products available like toothpaste, mouthwash and juice.

Eucalyptus

WholeHealthMD cites eucalyptus as an anti-inflammatory substance great for fighting gum disease. This could be due to its germ-fighting abilities; it kills the bacteria that parties in your mouth when gum recession occurs.

www.curetoothdecay.com recommends mixing the following two ingredients to create a mouthwash, for battling gum recession:

2 teaspoons of eucalyptus oil
1 cup of warm water

Vitamin C

According to www.perioptotect.com, Vitamin C has been used for centuries to stop gum swelling, bleeding and recession. This is backed up by information from www.good-gums.com, which cites a 14-week study done at the University of California San Francisco, which found the severity of bleeding gums to increase when Vitamin C intake decreased, and vice versa.

Grow Back Your Receding Gums In No Time With The Help Of These Natural Remedies

The situation of receding gums happens when the tissue of the gum around the teeth corrodes and it looks like your gums recede backwards. Then a large surface of the teeth is exposed and more visible. When the gums go back, the space between the gum line and the teeth rises. That is perfect place for bacteria growth. Another problem that may happen is over exposure of the root of the tooth that can lead to extreme pain and sensitivity of the tooth. It will also have a negative influence over the structure and bone of the tooth that can cause losing of the tooth.

Symptoms

This is a very common problem and most of the people who suffer from it do not notice the problem. The reason is because the process is slow and happens gradually. Remember to check your gums if you teeth have become very sensitive. That is one of the first signs. Another indicator is the size of you tooth: if it is larger than before then you need to treat the problem because it is a sign of receding gums.

Other symptoms may be:

  • Tooth pain/ache
  • Larger tooth than before
  • Tooth sensitivity

What causes receding gums?

It might be a gum disease, but it can be caused by other reasons such as:

  1. Periodontal diseases. That means bacterial infection in the gums. They cause damage to the supporting bone of the tooth and the gums, followed by other problems.
  2. Lack of oral hygiene. If you skip teeth brushing and flossing you might build up plague on the teeth. That can lead to calculus which is a hard substance which can lead to gum recession.
  3. Aggressive brushing. It is the complete opposite of brushing teeth on regular basis. If you brush your teeth aggressively then the enamel on your teeth will be destroyed and this will lead to receding gums.
  4. Sometimes you will blame the genes. In this case you cannot change a lot about your problem.
  5. Hormone imbalance can lead to receding gums. This can be a huge problem especially among women. Those changes lead to more vulnerable and sensitive gums.
  6. Smoking is also a reason for receding gums. Smoking also causes many other diseases such as lung disease and cancer, but it can also cause receding gums. People, who consume tobacco in any form, can get sticky plague on their teeth more easily and this leads to receding gums.
  7. Clenching and grinding your teeth will put pressure on them and this can cause receding gums. Using force to take bits while you eat may also cause the same problem.
  8. This is a weird reason, but piercing your tongue or lips can also lead to the same problem.

How to treat receding gums

If you notice the problem with receding gums on time your doctor can treat them with either root planning or tooth scaling. The doctor will safely remove the calculus or the plague from your teeth and the surface underneath the gum line. The other case is if you do not notice the problem on time. In this case you may need to do a surgery on your gums in order to repair the damage. Some of the surgeries may be: regeneration of the lost tissue and bone of gums and teeth, depth reduction, soft tissue graft etc. If you like to avoid surgery you can use some of the homemade remedies in this article. But remember to consult your doctor if you have serious gyms infection, because you need to know how deep has the bacteria gone. In this case, this step should not be avoided. If the problem is not so serious then you can use only these homemade remedies. By using them and with proper oral hygiene you can grow back you receding gums.

How can they grow back?

Lemons are acidic and remember that too much of them can destroy the enamel on your teeth. Do not use lemon oil every day. It should be used only one time in week. If you want you can make homemade lemon oil and you will not have to worry about that.

Homemade lemon oil:

You will need:

– ¼ to ½ cup of olive oil
– ½ to 1 freshly squeezed lemon juice

Directions: put the olive oil in a jar and add the lemon juice. Cover and shake it well. Leave the mixture for a couple of weeks. Remember to shake the jar every day. After three to four weeks you can start and use the oil.

It is better to prevent the problem then to cure it. If you see how many people have problems with receding gums then it is time to take some precautions. This way you will prevent other oral diseases as well. We will give you some tips that can help you to take better care of your gums and mouth.

Proper oral hygiene

This is one of the most important tips. It will keep the oral diseases away.

  • No aggressive brushing.
  • Use gentle strokes and circular motion.
  • Brush along your gym line, do not push the gums.

  • Floss!!!
  • The best way to keep good oral hygiene is to floss and brush after every meal. If you are not able to do that then after every meal use a mouthwash.

Mouthwash for a clean mouth

If you use a mouthwash on daily basis then your mouth will be free of bacteria and germs. It is recommended that you use it every day. We will give you recipes for homemade mouthwash if you do not want to use the ones from the market. They are made with some essential oils.

  • Mix 1 to 2 drops of essential oil, such as sage oil, peppermint, clove or tea tree oil and mix t with ¼ to ½ cups of water. Mix it well and use it every day.
  • Another good way to protect your mouth from infections is hydrogen peroxide. It is very strong so remember to dilute it with water.

Food that is healthy and full of nutrients can improve your overall health and boost your immune system as well. On the other hand, junk food will help the bacteria to grow in your mouth which can lead to many infections.

  • Eat as many fruits and vegetables as you can. We recommend the ones that are full of vitamin C, because it is very important for your gums. It can reduce inflammation and help in the regeneration of the gums. Eat a lot pineapple, strawberries, oranges, cauliflower, asparagus, broccoli, asparagus etc.
  • Reduce the sugar intake and avoid cold drinks. They are perfect home for bacteria.
  • Do not consume alcohol, processed food, caffeine and anything that is made of white flour. They are bad for your overall health as well as for your oral health.

Consult with your doctor for any supplements

If your body does not have all important nutrients it can lead to bad oral health and problems with the gums. In order to change that you need to visit your doctor and find out if you should increase the intake of certain vitamins or other important nutrients.

The following supplements can help you with receding gums:

  • Calcium: it is very important for dental and bone health.
  • Vitamin C: it will boost your immune system and also has many anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Ginkgo biloba: it will improve your blood circulation, which is crucial for having healthy gums.

How to Use These 4 Natural Remedies For Curing Receding Gums

Receding gums are often accompanied with pain and odd looking gaps between the teeth and the gum line. These gaps are a perfect soil for the development of dangerous bacteria.

According to WebMD, this could additionally damage both bone structure and supportive tissue. Unfortunately, the problem could further lead to tooth loss. If you thought that brushing can solve the problem, you are definitely wrong. It will take you more than that.

The root cause of receding gums

A thorough study that was published in the Journal of Periodontology Online has all the details regarding receding gums.

According to experts, it is all in the way you maintain your oral hygiene, including your brushing technique and flossing.

Genetics is the second major cause of receding gums. As you already know, one cannot change the way genes ‘work.’ Your genes are literally the reason for everything that happens to you when it comes to your health condition.

WebMD explains that about 30% of the population has the genetic potential of developing gum issues. If you are one of them, you better understand that you run at a high risk. If you have the ‘gene of receding gums,’ nothing will keep you safe from this issue, regardless of how well you brush your teeth.

Other experts believe that smoking is a huge contributor as well. You saw this one coming, right?

Smoking is considered to be one of the major causes for numerous gum issues, including receding gums, too.

How can you ease your condition?

Well, you can do a lot.

You can use several natural remedies that will help you treat the symptoms of receding gums. Remember, the remedies will only help you if the problem is diagnosed on time. You cannot hope for a miracle if your condition is really bad and it requires a surgery.

Here are some of the remedies you can use:

Green tea

According to a recent study, green tea can be of great help in the treatment of receding gums, of course only if you drink it regularly. Organic green tea protects teeth health and promotes healthy gums. The team of scientists revealed a reduction of three main indicators of periodontal disease:

  • Bleeding

These were the results after the participants were given green tee over a particular period of time.

Aloe vera

It is commonly known as the ‘soothing healer.’ At least that is how some experts like to describe it. The study involved 15 subjects, and the results showed that aloe vera has the ability to relieve numerous gum issues.

Next time you buy a toothpaste or other oral hygiene products, make sure they contain aloe vera.

What is Gingivitis, What Causes Gingivitis & How to Treat The Inflammation Of The Gums

Gingivitis means inflammation of the gums (gingiva). It commonly occurs because of films of bacteria that accumulate on the teeth -- plaque; this type is called plaque-induced gingivitis. Gingivitis is a non-destructive type of periodontal disease.

If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, which is more serious and can eventually lead to loss of teeth.

Gingivitis is a mild inflammation of the gums that can lead to serious problems if not taken seriously.

The most common cause of gingivitis is poor oral hygiene, although it may also be due to some nutritional deficiencies.

Since gingivitis is rarely painful it may be that you have it, without you even knowing it.

Gingivitis leads to the rapid formation of plaque (tartar), and can cause bad breath even though your teeth are completely healthy.

Factors that contribute to gingivitis include: poor oral hygiene, smoking, long-term build-up of tartar, diabetes, age, weak immune system due to chronic diseases, use of certain medications and poor nutrition.

Symptoms of gingivitis

  •  bleeding gums when brushing
  •  light- red or red-purple color of gums
  • soft or swollen gums
  • pulled away gums (do not cover enough teeth)
  • bad breath

How to treat the inflammation of the gums?

The treatment of gingivitis can be quite challenging. There are many natural remedies, but few are those who are truly effective.

In the following paragraphs we will describe the most effective methods, which do not necessarily have to be natural.

Dental scaling

Dental tartar presses the gums, causing them to pull away and contributes to inflammation. Therefore it is important to do a professional scaling every 6 months. It’s pretty painless, and the only disadvantage is that it can cause a mild bleeding during cleaning, if your gums are inflamed.

Green tea

Green tea is one of the few natural remedies that is effective and proven way to preserve the health of your gums.

Substances in green tea inhibit the growth of bacteria on the gums and thus reduce inflammation.

Green tea can also be found as an ingredient in special toothpastes, and can be found in capsules as an extract.

There are also chewing gums with green tea extract, and various sweets too.

Rinse mouth with hydrogen peroxide or mouthwash

Hydrogen peroxide is a liquid similar to water that is used in medicine for disinfection or killing the bacteria.

You can buy a diluted hydrogen peroxide (3%) in pharmacies. It will help you disinfect the mouth and gums, and it will additionally whiten your teeth.

Hydrogen peroxide is very safe and quite useful, but it is not recommended to use it for longer than 7 days, since it kills both, good and bad bacteria in the mouth, and can lead to ulcers in the mouth.

If you plan to use it for a longer period, then use it every second or third day. Many mouthwash products contain diluted hydrogen peroxide.

11 Most Effective Home Remedies For Receding Gums

Receding gums, or gingival recession, is a retraction of the gums from the crown of the teeth. It is a progressive condition that may start as early as in childhood or adolescence and worsens ever so gradually over the years. By the time it becomes apparent, usually past the age of 40, the roots of the teeth may have become exposed.

The roots of teeth sit in their individual sockets in the jaw bone. But the gum tissue tightly covering the jaw

bones and the base of their crowns plays a role in fixing the teeth in position and keeping them stable. The gums should ideally hug each tooth at a point a little above its neck––where the crown of the tooth meets the root. This protects the lower portion of the tooth from exposure to food materials and pathogens.

Separation of the gum margins from the tooth is the first stage of recession

Let’s see how that happens.

Bacteria in the mouth invariably form plaque, a sticky film on the teeth. You can remove bacteria by brushing and flossing, but unless removed periodically, preferably once every 12 hours, it can harden into tartar, a hard, yellowish-white calcareous deposit. Plaque and tartar buildup at the margins of gums cause their separation from the teeth. This, in turn, facilitates, even more, tartar deposits in the space between the teeth and the gums.

Gum recession is usually associated with poor dental hygiene since gum disease is the most common cause of this condition. But even if you brush your teeth religiously every morning and night and thoroughly floss in between them, you could still have receding gums. In fact, overaggressive hygiene measures like vigorous brushing and flossing can be equally responsible for gum inflammation, which exacerbates the gingival recession.

Some of the other risk factors for receding gums include smoking and tobacco use, bleeding from the gums as in scurvy due to Vitamin C deficiency, acid damage to the teeth enamel from acid reflux or self-induced vomiting, and orthodontic treatment involving repositioning of teeth.

Gum recession is often ignored because it doesn’t cause any problems early on. More often than not, it gets attention only when it starts to affect the aesthetics or cause other problems like sensitivity to hot or cold or acidic foods, abscesses in the gum, and tooth mobility. If left unattended, it can even lead to premature loss of teeth.

If you have any of the following symptoms of gum recession, it pays to take remedial measures as early as possible:

Longer teeth – This is hard to notice since the changes are gradual, but you could compare the present length with old photos.

Color change at the gum line – You might notice that your tooth crown and exposed root may be in different shades.

Inflamed gums – Your gums are red and swollen, especially along the margins.

Bleeding from the gums – Your gums may bleed when brushing teeth or biting into apples or other hard foods.

Food sensitivity – You may have a sharp pain when consuming hot, cold, sweet or acidic food and drinks.

Shaking teeth – You may feel your teeth moving slightly.

In early stages of gum recession, scaling, removal of plaque and tartar, combined with thorough, yet gentle, dental hygiene measures help control the condition. However, advanced cases often require surgical procedures such as gingival grafting. But here are some effective home remedies you can try irrespective of how severe the condition may be.

1. Yarrow
Yarrow is commonly called nosebleed or soldier’s woundwort because the juice of its leaves and stem can stop bleeding. Many North American tribes chew the leaves as a remedy for a toothache as well as a number of other ailments. The anticoagulant, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic, effects of yarrow can help with receding gums at any stage.

The simplest way to use yarrow is to chew on the leaves and stems if you have access to fresh supply. Pound the leaves or grind them into a paste and use it for gum massage. You can also make a yarrow tea for gargling. Pour boiling water over a handful of fresh yarrow flowers and leaves or 1-2 Tbsp dry herb and let it steep for 15-20 minutes. Strain and use when the tea has cooled down. This antiseptic tea can improve oral hygiene in general and remedy a number of problems, including gum disease and throat infections.

If you don’t want to mess with the herb, you can use the essential oil of yarrow. This blue-colored oil is very potent, so mix in a few drops of coconut oil or another carrier oil before using it as a gum paint.

2. Sumac
Whether you know sumac as a bush or tree growing in your backyard or as a tangy, red spice used for flavoring dishes or making pink lemonade, it can help you with receding gums. The plant parts have tannins that leave a puckering taste and a dry, sandpapery feel in the mouth characteristic of astringency. They draw out fluids from tissues, reducing inflammation and restoring gum tightness.

Remove the outer skin from sumac twigs and use them for massaging the gums or crush their tips and use them to brush the teeth and gums. You can boil the leaves to make a tea for gargling, or the red berries can be made into refreshing Indian lemonade. In addition, sumac berries are rich in Vitamin. You can also use the dried and coarsely powdered berries as a spice.

In case you are collecting leaves or berries from the wild, poison sumac has white berries, so you can easily tell it apart from the red-berried sumac Rhus spp.

3. Green tea
Regular use of green tea is found to improve dental health. It’s not surprising since the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of green are well known. According to a Japanese study, green tea habit not only reduces the chance of developing periodontal disease but brings down gum inflammation and improves the attachment of gums to the teeth. Sip green tea once or twice a day, allowing the tannins in the beverage to do the work.

4. Sage
Sage tea is another herbal remedy you can try for receding gums. This herb has a long history of being used for dental problems, thanks to its excellent antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. People used to chew its leaves as a remedy for swollen gums and dental abscesses. A tea made from sage leaves can be used as a gargle for a sore throat and mouth ulcers. It can improve overall dental hygiene, besides protecting your gums.

Making a sage tea from fresh or dried sage is easy. Just steep a handful of fresh leaves or 2 Tbsp dried herb in hot water for 15-20 minutes and strain out the liquid. You can even use the leftover slush for massaging the gums.

5. Aloe vera
The soothing gel obtained from the succulent leaves of Aloe vera can reduce gum inflammation and recession. Use fresh herb for this purpose. Break off a piece of the leaf and rub it on your gums. Repeat this as often as you like. The gel can be scooped out and stored in the refrigerator. After brushing your teeth, dab the gel on your gums and massage to restore the tight texture of the gum tissue.

6. Sesame seed oil
Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic technique of detoxification. Put 1-2 Tbsp of sesame seed oil in your mouth and swish it around for 10-15 minutes before spitting it out. Although oil pulling is used to treat several health problems, improvement in dental health is one of the earliest outcomes. However, it does take a bit of getting used to. Be sure not to oil pull on an empty stomach.

7. Coconut oil
The lauric acid and medium chain triglycerides (MCTs) in coconut oil have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Massaging the gums with a pinch of fine sea salt mixed with a bit of coconut oil can reduce inflammation.

Although oil pulling is traditionally performed with sesame seed oil, you can try coconut oil as well. It is lighter and has a more pleasant taste. Melt 1-2 Tbsp oil in a ladle and use.

8. Lemon oil
The essential oil of lemon obtained from the lemon peel is antiseptic and antimicrobial. Add ten drops of lemon oil to a cup of warm water and gargle, or mix 2-3 drops in a teaspoonful of coconut oil and rub on your gums to reduce inflammation and recession. This bitter oil has a fresh citrusy smell that can dispel bad breath.

9. Clove oil
Clove oil is widely used for toothache relief because it numbs the soft tissues, but it’s only a temporary effect. The oil is often used in dental hygiene products for its strong, long-lasting, antibacterial effect. It also tops the list for its antioxidant capacity. Use 5-6 drops in a cup of warm water as a mouthwash.

10. Lemongrass oil
Lemongrass has anti-fungal and antiseptic properties that prevent the growth of certain kinds of yeast and bacteria commonly found in the mouth. It has an anti-inflammatory, astringent action on the gums too. Boil 2-3 stems in water to make a pleasantly lemony mouth gargle or use ten drops of the essential oil in a cup of warm water. Regular use relieves inflammation and restores the normal, healthy texture of gums.

11. Vitamin C
A deficiency in Vitamin C can cause gum inflammation and bleeding. Supplementation usually shows dramatic improvement. Vitamins are ideally obtained from food because they are better utilized by the body in their natural forms rather than their synthetic versions.

Fresh vegetables and fruits are rich in Vitamin C, especially dark leafy greens, bell peppers, broccoli, tomatoes kiwifruit, berries and citrus fruits. However, a significant percentage of the vitamin C is lost during storage, juicing and cooking. To avoid this, source fresh fruit and vegetables locally whenever possible, and consume them raw. Drink green smoothies and fruit juices immediately after preparation.

If you are not getting enough of Vitamin C from foods, consider taking a good supplement.

Coconut oil seems to be the most popular of choice right now, but any of the above mentioned oils will work and give you the desired results. Next, take a tablespoon of the oil of your choice and swish around in your mouth for no longer than 20 minutes.

It is recommended that you build up to that 20 minutes. Start with a goal of 5 minutes the first few times you oil pull and slowly add more time until you reach the 20 minutes. We have provided a routine below that will help get you to the 20 minutes gradually.

How To Oil Pull

So now that you have the basic info and setup to oil pulling, committing it to a routine will be beneficial. People that have smaller mouths may have a harder time starting out, so using a little less oil is ok.

Oil pulling is simple, yet it is still an art form that takes time to get used to. Start by swirling oil around the front and back of your mouth and over your tongue. Move the oil toward the back of your throat, making sure not to swallow it. Now the tricky part that takes time to get used to, move the oil between your teeth. This takes some practice and use of jaw muscles you probably are not used to using, but getting between your teeth will drastically increase the benefits of oil pulling. Finally, make sure that you swish the oil around your gums too, as oil pulling will improve your whole oral health if done correctly!

Quick note: you do not want to spit the oil down the drain or toilet because it can create clogging. Instead, spit the oil into a trash bin.

It is not uncommon for your mouth and tongue to feel sore or tired after doing this. This is why it is recommended to start with 5 minutes and build up to the 20 minutes.

Maximize Oil Pulling

There are a few different things you can do before and after oil pulling to help increase the results and prepare yourself better for oil pulling.

-Flossing: just like before brushing, it is best to floss before oil pulling as flossing will help remove particles from between your teeth and gums and help the oil reach deeper.
-Drink water: water will help prepare your teeth for the oil and help your mouth handle the oil easier. Plus, like with any detox (yes oil pulling a detox!) it is important to stay hydrated.
-Eat later: You don’t want to always oil pull right after eating as some people may experience slight nausea from oil pulling.
-Brushing: Some people will replace brushing all together with oil pulling (that is your choice) regardless, it is important to brush your teeth, without any thing, to remove any particles or toxins that might be still stuck.

Best Guide to Oil Pulling

This is best performed first thing in the morning when you wake up

-Drink a glass of water (skip this if you are oil pulling later in the day)
-Floss your teeth and if you want to use a tongue scraper to help remove particles and open up your gums
-Choose your oil of choice
-Put one tablespoon of oil in your mouth
-Start swishing
-Pull the oil between your teeth and around your gums, making sure not to swallow it
-Continue step 6 for at least 5 minutes and no longer than 20 minutes
-Spit the oil into a cup or trash bin
-Gargle a little warm salt water to help remove any bacteria
-Brush your teeth without anything to help remove dislodged particles

This is a basic guide to help you get started on your oil pulling adventure. Oil pulling has been cautioned as something you should not do every day as it can do things to your enamel, but the results are mixed on that. There are plenty of people and studies that have recommended oil pulling on a daily basis to help detox your mouth. However, some also recommend to only oil pull three times a week. The decision is your personal preference and one you can build up to based on how you feel and how your mouth is reacting to this new routine.
